Strong schools are built on strong leadership. In Jharkhand, an ambitious effort to strengthen school leadership is creating ripple effects across the state’s CM Schools of Excellence, shaping not only how schools are managed, but how students learn and thrive.
Through a collaboration between the Jharkhand Education Project Council and ECHO India, the Transformational School Leadership ECHO Program was launched to support school heads with the skills, mindset, and collaborative networks needed to drive meaningful change.
Designed as a virtual, case-based learning initiative, the program connected principals from 80 Schools of Excellence across districts, enabling them to learn from experts and from one another, without stepping away from their responsibilities.
Leadership at the Heart of Educational Change
The CM Schools of Excellence were envisioned as institutions that would set new benchmarks in public education. However, achieving this vision required more than resources, it required empowered leaders capable of fostering innovation and academic rigor.
Reflecting on the intent behind the initiative, Shri S. D. Tigga, Administrative Officer, JEPC, shared, “The idea of CM Schools of Excellence was initiated with a vision to cultivate institutions that are not merely centers of learning but beacons of innovation, holistic development, and academic rigor.”
Recognizing leadership as a critical lever for transformation, the program focused on equipping school heads with practical tools for strategic planning, curriculum innovation, and community engagement.
A Collaborative Learning Experience
Unlike traditional training programs, the ECHO model fostered a culture of continuous learning and peer exchange. Participants engaged in real-world case discussions, shared experiences, and collectively explored solutions to challenges faced in their schools.
Describing the experience, Shri Jitender Jha, Team Leader, PMU Adarsh Vidyalaya, JEPC, noted, “Blending practical case studies with thoughtful discussions on innovative and collaborative strategies, this program has been an inspiring and transformative experience.”
The sessions created a dedicated space for leaders to reflect, innovate, and strengthen their leadership practices while building a supportive professional community.
Visible Shifts in School Culture and Performance
As the program progressed, encouraging changes began to emerge across participating schools from improved academic focus to stronger school environments and leadership confidence.
Shri Tigga highlighted the early impact, “The results are immediate and encouraging, with notable shifts in school culture and academic performance within the SoE cohort.”
Access to ongoing mentorship and peer learning enabled school leaders to experiment with new ideas and implement changes suited to their contexts.
A Shared Commitment to Better Education
For the Jharkhand Education Project Council, the program represented more than capacity building; it marked a step toward a collaborative approach to strengthening public education systems.
Expressing gratitude for the partnership, Shri Jha emphasized, “We look forward to carrying forward the ideas and practices shared during this program, and to continuing this collaborative journey toward strengthening educational outcomes for all.”
Moving Forward
The JEPC–ECHO collaboration demonstrates that investing in leadership can unlock transformation at scale. By moving knowledge instead of people, the program ensured that school leaders across Jharkhand could access high-quality professional development while continuing to serve their communities.
As these leaders continue to apply what they have learned, the impact will extend far beyond individual schools - shaping a stronger, more resilient education system for the future.
